Students explore career options as EMSB career fair makes its return

“You only live once, do what you want to do,” says grade 11 student, Erika Ellingsen, from Montreal’s Westmount High School at the EMSB's Education and Career Fair on Wednesday – the first day of the two-day event. Pamela Pagano reports.

From nursing to hairdressing to welding, Montreal students explored their options for the future with the help of the 22nd English Montreal School Board Career Fair.

Students made their way to St. Pius X Career Centre in Ahuntsic on Wednesday – the first day of the two-day event.

It was the EMSB’s first career fair since 2019, as COVID-19 cancelled the last two.

Students visited various booths staffed by instructors from vocational centres, CEGEPs, universities and private business colleges.

This is what some of the students had to say.

Kiara Miliga (Westmount High School, Grade 11): “This career fair actually helped me realize what I like.”

Erika Ellingsen (Westmount High School, Grade 11): “I want to go to translation, but specifically like translating jobs and subtitles and scripts of movies… You only live once, do what you wanna do.”

Kenya Yevoah-Whye (Westmount High School, Grade 11): “Maybe real estate, interior design or business, and reason? Because it’s like, I want to be my own boss and open my own company one day.

“It’s time to pick what you want to do and to achieve it. I’m really happy to be here and I’m thankful that our schools have the time and patience to do this.”

Saima Mazumder: “I want to go into journalism because I really I like talking, I’m someone who talks a lot and I like writing. So feel like the perfect career for both interests.”

Several professionals were on hand to give advice to students.

Andrew Fung (welding teacher at Laurier Macdonald Career Centre): “My advice to students is to follow what they like to do. And if you like working with your hands, then welding is a career path for you.”

Nick Katalifos (director general, EMSB): “I think the students get very excited. It’s wonderful to see even the younger ones when they come in and they get to see all of the technology, all of the specialists that are here.”

Nathalie Lacroix-Maillette (regional director, EMSB): “This career fair, it gives them an overview of what’s out there, and there’s so much for them.”

CityNews’ Pamela Pagano took part in the event as one of the many emcees.
