Quebec COVID hospitalizations up, new Omicron subvariant

Quebec with 14 COVID deaths added to its total and hospitalizations up by 51 patients since Dec. 29.
This as a new Omicron subvariant, XBB.1.5, makes its way to the province.
XBB.1.5 was first detected in October, according to World Health Organization (WHO), and has since been identified in 25 countries.
The latest data shows the province is dealing with 363 active COVID outbreaks and 2,870 health workers absent from the system due to the virus.
17,714 fatalities total since the pandemic began, none in the last 24 hours.
2,135 people being treated in hospital, but 734 of those admitted because of COVID-19 symptoms, the rest tested positive after being hospitalized for other ailments. 711 new entries and 660 discharges since Dec. 29.
Of those, 57 in ICU, including 28 specifically for COVID and the rest testing positive after being admitted – that number decreasing by seven compared to the last data Dec. 29, with 30 newly admitted and 37 released.

A total of 1,217 new infections in the last 24 hours, with 81 tests self-declared by Quebecers who were positive. The overall case numbers likely an undercount as access to PCR tests is limited to specific groups and not everyone self-declare their rapid tests.
