Snowstorm headed for Montreal area

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Montreal area, with flurries set to begin amid evening rush hour.

A total of 15 to 25 centimetres expected into Thursday, with moderate winds and at times blowing snow.

Montreal could see about 15 cm on the ground by midnight Wednesday night.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas,” said the weather agency.

Thursday’s morning commute could be a difficult one.

Another five to 10 cm could fall during the day on Thursday before tapering to flurries in the afternoon.

The warning in affect for:

  • Châteauguay – La Prairie area
  • Laval area
  • Longueuil – Varennes area
  • Montreal Island area

“A massive winter storm is getting ready to blow into Eastern Canada starting Wednesday. The Texas low will sweep across Southern Ontario beginning Wednesday morning while Southwestern Quebec will start to feel the effects beginning evening.”

“Snowfall warnings are also in effect for areas north of the city, like Lachute, Saint-Jerome and the Lanaudière. Regions south of Montreal, down toward the U.S. border and out toward the Eastern Townships are also under the warning and could see similar amounts.”

Temperatures of -20 with the wind chill on Wednesday and -11 on Thursday.

Sunshine returns Friday, with a high of -7.

Sun and clouds on Saturday, and plus 2 degrees.

More snow expected come Sunday, with minus 9 degrees.

The Montreal-area has already seen 125 cm fall since the beginning of the season, with the average by this time of the winter usually around 107 cm.
