Montreal’s Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery closed again amid Ice Storm cleanup

Montreal’s Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery is closed once more, this time due to Ice Storm damages and a lack of staff to help cleanup amid the ongoing labour dispute.
Canada’s largest cemetery had only recently reopened at the end of March to families paying their respects.
Headstones were destroyed and some of the paths blocked by trees and branches that fell April 5.
The cemetery says it could take weeks to cleanup.
The union and management are at an impasse in negotiations.
Workers there have been without a contract since 2017.

Some cemeteries can hire subcontractors to fill-in the gaps, but Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cannot. Their contract with their workers forbids the cemetery from getting outside help.
