The Montreal police (SPVM) carried out nine raids Wednesday morning – in four Montreal boroughs – which lead to the arrest of eight people in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old man last month in Anjou.
The teen was shot and killed on March 19 while on a sidewalk on Hérisson Avenue. The suspects – who authorities say shot from a moving vehicle – quickly fled the scene.

“They’re all friends, they’re major, close to 18 years old, they’re active in theft of vehicles,” said Jean-Sébastien Caron, Chief of SPVM Major Crimes Unit
Police say the suspects are likely linked to other instances of armed violence, and were found with equipment to steal vehicles.
They’re known to police, allegedly part of a gang. Authorities say the murder is linked to a battle of two gangs.
“The problem with the gangs is we don’t really know exactly why they are in conflict,” Caron said. “It’s been so many years they’re in conflict, so many events, it’s just going up and up. It’s continued like that, so that’s why we want to stop it right away.”

Some 175 police officers are part of the investigation, from the SPVM, the Sûreté du Québec and the Longueuil police force.
