School nurses could cover Lakeshore Hospital ER

By The Canadian Press

The Lakeshore Hospital nurses’ union says hospital management is planning to use school nurses to cover the emergency room this summer.

That comes a day after a scathing report on the state of care offered by the ER, in which 135 recommendations were made to improve the situation.

The independent report released Thursday was prepared by Francine Dupuis, a retired executive at one of Montreal’s regional health boards.

In the conclusion of the report, Dupuis wrote that “emergency needs competent personnel” and “the staff must be well trained, have good judgment and a great ability to listen.”

And one of the recommendations – no. 54 – was that no new nurse be left on the ground “if she has not received her complete training in emergency care,” saying expertise was crucial.

But on the day the report was tabled, the Syndicat des professionnelles en soins de santé de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal (SPSSSODIM) says it learned hospital management wants to use school nurses to cover evening and weekend shifts at Lakeshore emergency.

The union fears these nurses are not properly trained to work in the emergency room.
