Montreal launches free gun violence prevention support line

By News Staff

Montrealers wishing to share their concerns about gun violence in the city now have access to a new telephone support service.

The City of Montreal launched the free and confidential “Renfort” – French for reinforcement – telephone service Wednesday.

Concerned citizens can call 514-653-6363 to speak to a trained counsellor about gun violence, such as if they are worried about a member of their family.

The phone line, launched with the support of the Centre de prévention de la radicalisation menant à la violence (CPRMV), will be available on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on weekends from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The implementation of the support telephone service was one of the commitments made by city officials following last summer’s forum on gun violence in Montreal.

“Parents who feel powerless in the face of violent situations that their children may experience now have a telephone service where specialists answer them without judgement,” Mayor Valérie Plante said. “It is very important for us that they can be listened to, advised or referred to the many services and resources that exist on the territory of the metropolis.

“By focusing on prevention and seeking to improve the quality of life and careers of young people, this initiative embodies the Montreal model in urban safety.”
