Montreal police (SPVM) released the results of its “Back to School 2023” operation, which ran from August 28 to September 22.

During these four weeks, SPVM officers issued no fewer than 6,246 tickets to road users.

In addition, photo radar surveillance operations in school zones also took place, and 1,675 infractions were recorded.

“The safety of all road users is a constant priority throughout the year. The back-to-school period is obviously a highlight, because in addition to ensuring the safety of our little ones, we sometimes have to call to order those who have lost certain safety reflexes over the summer,” points out Stéphane Desroches, commander and head of the SPVM’s Road Safety Section in a press release.

Number of fines issued: 6,246 total

  • School zone speeding (fines doubled): 285
  • Other speeding: 2,144
  • Other violations 3,724
  • Failure to stop at intermittent red school bus lights: vehicles 90, cyclists 3

Photo radar in school zones:

  • 119 hours of operation
  • 30,657 vehicles detected
  • 1,675 offences detected

“The start of the 2023 school year also saw 1,180 prevention activities take place in the 29 neighbourhood police stations (PDQs) across the region, reaching over 3,000 people. The PDQs conduct road safety prevention and surveillance operations throughout the year, in addition to national concerted operations (ONC) with all the province’s police forces.”

The SPVM also innovated this year with its “living radar” project, involving students at the start of the school year to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive speed in school zones.
