Vehicle in Griffintown catches fire due to mechanical breakdown, no injuries reported

A van caught fire in Griffintown on Thursday afternoon, sending flames soaring and black smoke billowing above condo buildings.

Luckily no one was injured.

A viewer submitted these images of the blaze, taken around 2 pm – just after they say they heard a loud noise on Wellington Street – and saw the vehicle engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were on scene minutes later, evacuating people in nearby shops and restaurants.

The fire was put out not too long after.

The images above show what was left of the van after the flames were put out.

No one was inside the van at the time.

Montreal police say it’s not being investigated as a criminal fire, but as a mechanical breakdown.

The van stayed on scene for further investigation – until it was towed away about an hour later.
