Illumi in Laval is set to go dark

The countdown has begun for the Illumi light display, which is set to close on January 7.

The immersive installation of multicolored and magical worlds has attracted millions of visitors over its five years in Laval. Now, the city’s plans for a new construction project in the area – Carré Laval – will force Illumi to relocate.

“Not so long ago there was discussion with the city for an additional two years,” says creator and artistic director, Normand Latourelle, adding “we were very happy until they changed their mind. They said, ‘no,’ you have to finish your lease. So it’s just sad because, people, they want it.”

Laval city spokesperson, Philippe Dery, says the agreement from 2019 noted that Laval would take back the space in 2024.

Still, Montrealers are saddened.

“Just look at the light and you will, you will enjoy this moment,” one visitor said.

“We don’t want it to shut down. We want our families to come down, see the art that is here. Community is all about getting together with people. And so in that sense, people should not be deprived of it,” shared another Montrealer.

With its three kilometres of 25 million lights comprising 19 installations, Illumi is the largest light, sound and multimedia show in the world. The work has contributed around $100 million to Montreal’s economy.

“I wish for the future that the city will find a project that will bring as many people and as many smiles to families. But we’re at the point where we have to say, OK, it was a beautiful five years,” says Latourelle.

As one door closes, it will be on to California for the lights of Illumi.
