Énergie Cardio files for bankruptcy

By The Canadian Press

Fitness company Énergie Cardio says they’ve filed for bankruptcy and will close two of their locations.

The Quebec-based company filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 30, filing a notice of intention to make a proposal to restructure its operations.

As a result, two of its training centres have closed in Place Versailles, located in the East end of Montreal and in Boucherville, which was called ‘Pour elle.’

There are 19 Énergie Cardio centres that will remain open and 14 are franchises.

In a press release on Wednesday, Énergie Cardio president Claire Tremblay and vice-president Eveline Canape write that the pandemic had “shaken up” the fitness sector, which had to close operations when health measures were imposed.

“In the last few hours, for budgetary and cash management reasons, we have unfortunately had no choice but to proceed with redundancies in our corporate training centres and at franchisee level,” they explained.

Énergie Cardio says free training sessions and group classes will be continue in the centres affected by staff cuts.

The company has invited customers of the two centres that are being closed to consult the Office de la protection du consommateur to obtain compensation for the unused or prepaid portion of their membership.

Claire Tremblay and Eveline Canape acquired Énergie Cardio in 2016.
