Commemorations in Amqui: one year after truck attack

By The Canandian Press

Commemorations will take place Wednesday in Amqui to mark the first anniversary of the truck attack which claimed the lives of three people and injured eight.

The driver, 39-year-old Steeve Gagnon, turned himself in shortly after the incident.

He is currently detained and has been ordered to stand trial, with a court date set for June 3.

The mayor of Amqui, Sylvie Blanchette, asked citizens to respect a minute of silence at 3:05 p.m. on Wednesday – the time when the attack took place in 2023.

The population is also invited to Parc Pierre-et-Maurice-Gagné at 6 p.m., along the Matapédia River, for a commemoration.

There will be speeches by Parti Québécois MNA Pascal Bérubé, Bloc Québécois MP Kristina Michaud, and Mayor Blanchette among others.

Around 6:30 p.m., a citizens’ march will take place on the Saint-Benoît Blvd. West sidewalk, which is where the victims were struck.

An hour later, at 7:30 p.m., a mass will be celebrated at the Amqui church.

Gérald Charest, Jean Lafrenière and Simon-Guillaume Bourget all lost their lives in the attack on March 13, 2023.
