Students at Montreal’s Vanier College are upping their language skills and learning phrases from Classical Arabic to English.

The school is offering a variety of courses to help students better integrate.

“These are full-time daytime programs, largely composed of international students and it’s really a wonderful, diverse environment. We have students who come from many, many different countries,” said Rowena Selby, a coordinator at the Vanier Language School.

In addition to French and English, the school offers other languages such as Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and American Sign Language.

“Every class is always different. We have international students, so everybody will share a few languages but generally speaking there will be diversity of languages,” said Jonathan Astras, one of the teachers at the school.

Mohammed Mohammed is one of the student’s in Astras’ class. In addition to learning English, Mohammed says the class gives him the opportunity to learn about different cultures.

“What the most I like about the class is the teacher, how do they teach us and also the vibes of the class and also I try to know a new culture of the student of the class,” said Mohammed.

For Cindy Noel, another student in Astras’ class, this program is also an opportunity to enjoy the student experience.

“It’s so funny for me because I’m older than all the class, but it’s OK for me. It’s made me more younger. It’s a long time ago I didn’t enter in college,” said Noel.

Kamil Cacan is in another class learning English. He says he’s looking forward to learning both English and French and is pleased with the program so far.

“This is my second day and I like my friends and classmates. Everything is good now and school is very comfortable,” said Cacan.
