Coroner recommends license suspensions for drivers caught without seat belts in Quebec

By News Staff

A coroner is recommending suspending driver’s licenses temporarily for those caught not wearing a seatbelt.

This comes after the death of 25-year-old Felix Demers-Dube when he was killed in a crash in the Montérégie region in 2022.

Demers-Dube wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

According to his report, Coroner Rudi Daelman says the man’s death was preventable.

One of the three vehicles involved in the crash had veered out of its lane, leading to a head-to-head collision.

The 2023 road report from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) revealed that nearly 20 per cent of victims who died in collisions were not wearing seat belts. In 2022, this rate rose to almost 30 per cent.

Daelman recommends changes to the Highway Safety Code for road users to have their licences suspended for three 3 months if they’re caught driving without a seat belt.
