Work at Berri-UQAM metro causing multiple road closures in downtown Montreal

By CityNews Staff

Work at the Berri-UQAM metro continues – causing major road closures in the downtown Montreal area and headaches for many drivers.

Multiple roads have been closed off since 2022, and despite being scheduled to be completely finished by the end of 2023, work on de Maisonneuve Blvd. east is now expected to be done by July 2024.

This work was to replace a waterproof membrane protecting the Berri-UQAM metro station’s roof.

In particular, STM spokesperson Kevin Bilodeau tells CityNews by email that “some site surprises were discovered during construction, such as contaminated soil and the presence of a large 20-metre-long concrete block to be demolished in a difficult-to-reach location (which was not in the plans). Such discoveries are not uncommon on this type of site, as the plans often date back to the 60s.”

Various sections of de Maisonneuve Blvd. will be gradually reopened between May and July.

Next steps:

  • April – May 2024: Reopening of the northern sidewalk of de Maisonneuve Blvd., between St-Denis Street and Savoie alley, then between Savoie alley and Berri Street.
  • End of May 2024: Partial reopening of de Maisonneuve Blvd. to vehicular traffic.
  • June 2024: Partial reopening of the north sidewalk between Sanguinet and Berri streets.
  • July 2024: complete reopening between Sanguinet and Berri streets.

This will push back the start of phase 2, which is still in the planning stage, to 2025 explained Montreal’s public transit agency.
