Deadline to file taxes without penalty is today

By The Canadian Press

Individuals who haven’t filed their 2023 tax return have until today, or they will be charged interest and additional penalties.

Tuesday is also the deadline to pay any outstanding balances.

Those who are self-employed have until June 15 to file their tax returns and since that falls on a Saturday, the government will consider returns received or posted by June 17 within the deadline.

Interest on any outstanding balance starts being calculated on May 1, even for self-employed workers.

The late-filing penalty is 5 per cent of the balance that’s owed on the due date, plus 1 per cent added for each additional month until it’s paid.

Revenu Québec still recommends that citizens file their tax return by Tuesday evening, even if they fear not being able to pay their balance in order to avoid penalties and interest.

As of Sunday, Revenu Québec has received more than 5,522,000 tax returns, and 5,061,000 have been filed electronically.
