Montreal sees record rainfall, weather alert ends following remnants of Hurricane Beryl

By News Staff

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl brought significant amounts of rain to Montreal on Wednesday, with some neighbourhoods receiving up to 100 mm of rain. And the city was still under a rainfall warning on Thursday morning, which later ended.

Montreal was particularly hard hit, some areas getting 30 mm in an hour.

The city’s 311 line received about 1,500 calls on Wednesday specifically related to water accumulation and flooding.

The wet weather left drivers stranded on the roads for hours on Wednesday afternoon, closing numerous highways, including parts of Decarie and Highway 30. Some were even forced to exit their vehicles amid the rising water levels on the roads.

Quebec’s Transport Ministry will conduct a post-mortem to better understand what happened and what can be done to make the infrastructure more resilient in the future amid climate change.

On Monday, a mix of sun and clouds with a 60 per cent chance of showers – and steady at 29 degrees.
