New workers strike at three hotels in Quebec

By News Staff

More than 400 unionized workers at the Bonaventure Hotel in Montreal, the PUR Hotel in Quebec City and the Delta in Sherbrooke were on strike Thursday.

Their goal – to increase pressure to move negotiations forward with their employers.

This new walkout is one of the many strike days that have taken place since July as part of the 11th round of negotiations in the CSN hotel industry.

The union represents over 3,500 workers in 30 Quebec hotels.

The group warns that more strike days are expected, including new province-wide walkout if negotiations don’t improve.

“With the business events and banquet season starting in hotels, the balance of power remains at stake. There is only one way to end the impasse and that is for hoteliers to finally understand that they will have to share the profits,” said Fédération du commerce (FC-CSN) Treasurer Michel Valiquette. “The mobilization has allowed us to move forward on several of our common demands. What is blocking us now is the salary. It will take more on the table to reach agreements.”

Some of their demands include a 36 per cent pay increase over four years and reducing their workload.
