Police launched an investigation following a “suspicious” fire that broke out in a residence in Kirkland, on Montreal’s West Island, overnight.
Montreal police (SPVM) were called around midnight to Hedgerow Street, near Lacey Green Street, in Kirkland. The person who initially contacted emergency services did not specify the reason for the call.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a residence on fire. They then called the fire department.
“Once the fire was under control, the firefighters transferred the investigation to the SPVM. The fire is considered a suspicious fire,” said SPVM spokesperson Antony Dorélas.
The fire did not cause any injuries.
The cause is currently unknown, and the arson unit is investigating the incident.
Pointe-aux-Trembles kitchen fire
Half an hour earlier, another fire broke out at a residential building in Pointe-aux-Trembles.
Emergency services were called to an apartment complex on 27th Ave., near Notre-Dame Street East.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen on a third-floor apartment, which forced the evacuation of the entire 16-unit building.
A woman who lived in the unit confirms to CityNews that she wok up around 11 p.m. and the kitchen was on fire because she forgot a pot on the stove. She called 911. It was like “a scary movie” and got “really scared,” she explains, but that all the neighbours were very helpful – and everyone was safe.

The flames were quickly brought under control by 40 firefighters, and damage was limited to the one unit – specifically the kitchen, but the apartment smells like heavy smoke – making it unlivable for now.
