Québec solidaire’s Vincent Marissal not ruling out running for Montreal mayor

By The Canadian Press

Vincent Marissal, Québec solidaire’s MNA for Rosemont, did not rule out running as a possible candidate for mayor of Montreal on Thursday.

“I find it flattering that people think (that I could be a candidate),” he said at a press briefing in the National Assembly. “I need to do an interview with myself. I need to talk. Politics is also a family matter.”

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante announced on Wednesday she would not run for a third term as mayor. Since then, several names have been circulating to run for the top municipal job, including Marissal’s.

At the press briefing, Marissal praised Plante’s work and said he still had some time to think about it before making a decision on his political future. He would not say how long he would think about it.

“Will it be between the turkey and the cranberries? I don’t know,” Marissal said, likely referencing Christmas. “Will it be on Halloween? I don’t know.”

The MNA acknowledged he had been approached a few months ago by some people on the subject, but he said he had put that thought on hold. Marissal assured he is very satisfied with his work as an MNA at the moment.

“Do I like my job here in Quebec City? That’s a resounding yes. I love my job here,” he said.

However, he acknowledged he had a hard time with the departure last spring of the former QS co-spokesperson, Émilise Lessard-Therrien, whom he had strongly supported during the race for spokesperson.

A former journalist, Marissal has been a QS MNA since 2018. He is responsible for health, sports and ethics issues, in addition to assuming responsibilities related to the metropolis.
