Get into the spooky spirit with this Montreal home: ‘It can blow people’s minds’

"It can blow people’s minds," says Ivan Dow who transforms his home in Dorval every Halloween. The haunted trail he creates takes 20 minutes to go through, and is a way to raise funds for charity. Pamela Pagano reports.

If you’re afraid of clowns you might want to look away.

This home in Montreal’s Dorval is filled with them every spooky season along with other creepy-crawlies for over 40 years now, thanks to Ivan Dow who decorates with his wife for charity.

“When you’re a little kid and you go to certain Halloween houses and they’re really good,” said Dow. “You never forget them.”

“This is a chance for me to do something,” said Dow. “That people aren’t going to forget.”

And how could this be forgotten?

Preparations begin two months before Halloween, though many items in his garden are permanent

“It gets a little bit better every year,” he said. “I have a sort of an advantage in that I’ve been playing with fog machines and lighting and strobes for almost all my life.”

“That helps a lot in terms of the setup with Ivan and Company.”

The spine-chilling and very detailed trail through his yard, takes about 20 minutes to go through.

“580 Pine Beach in Dorval,” said Dow. “It’s on the north side, right near the airport.”

“They can make a donation, if you don’t want to that’s fine,” he added. “They can just come through and have fun.”

How fang-tastic?

Sun Youth on Oct. 31st where the brave are welcomed from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.

And the West Island Citizens Advocacy on Nov. 2nd from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.

But just why does he love Halloween?

“Just the way,” he said. “It can blow people’s minds a little bit.”
