Poll: Quebec Liberals overtake CAQ, but PQ still leads

By Thomas Laberge, The Canadian Press

The latest Pallas Data poll shows that the Quebec Liberals  (PLQ) are ahead of the governing Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), even though they are still leaderless. Although, the Parti Québécois (PQ) continues to hold the lead.

The PLQ is at 22 per cent, compared to 20 per cent for François Legault’s party.

The Liberals made a gain of four points compared to a November poll, while the CAQ remains stable.

Pallas Data is not the only firm to measure a rise in the PLQ. A Léger poll published in February indicated a five-point increase for the Liberals. The CAQ, for its part, lost three points. And the two have parties found themselves neck and neck in second place with 21 per cent.

The Liberals will elect their new leader on June 14. In the meantime, LaFontaine MNA Marc Tanguay continues to act as the party’s interim leader.

According to the latest Pallas Data poll, the PQ remains in the lead with 32 per cent of voting intentions. However, this is a drop of three points compared to the poll conducted by the same firm in November.

Eric Duhaime’s conservatives came fourth with 15 per cent (+ two) and Québec solidaire with 10 per cent (- two).

This poll, by the Toronto-based company, was carried out on Friday and Saturday on behalf of “L’actualité” and the poll aggregator Qc125.

Voters were therefore surveyed after the resignation of the Minister of Cybersecurity, Éric Caire, but before Premier Legault’s announcement of the public inquiry to shed light on the SAAQclic sandal.

The survey was conducted on a random sample of 1,120 respondents. The margin of error is ±3 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
