CPE daycares: 13 strike days, negotiations continue with Quebec

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Negotiations continued on Wednesday between Quebec and the Fédération de la santé et des services sociaux (FSSS), as the union members affected by the CPEs completed their 13th day of strike action.

The negotiation concerns workers in 400 early childhood centers, CPEs, who are members of unions attached to FSSS, affiliated with the CSN.

For the time being, no further strikes are planned after Wednesday, announced the federation. The 13 strike days held so far were spread across Jan., Feb., March, and April.

Negotiations have been going on intensively for several days now.

Both parties are trying to come up with a solution, while the Quebec government is insisting on wage increases of 17.4 per cent over five years—as was granted to all government employees and to other union organizations representing workers in childcare centers.

On April 8, the representative of the CPE sector at the FSSS, Stéphanie Vachon, had specified that “the bone we have in terms of salary conditions is too important; it is this knot that must be undone and everything else should fall into place afterwards.”

The three other unions participating in this national CPE negotiation have already reached settlements for several months. They are the Fédération des intervenantes en petite enfance, affiliated with the CSQ, the Syndicat québécois des employés de service (SQEES), and the Syndicat des métallos, both affiliated with the FTQ. However, the FSSS has the largest number of CPE workers.
