La Spada restaurant in Saint-Henri broken into again after new alarm fails to trigger

A Saint-Henri restaurant was broken into for the second time in the past three months.
La Spada on Notre-Dame Street says four bottles of alcohol were stolen in the Wednesday morning break-in.
“Another $1,000+ in damage to replace doors and locks. Waste of time and energy,” the restaurant wrote on social media.
After La Spada was broken into in April – during which the empty safe was stolen – the Saint-Henri eatery replaced its broken alarm system.
On Wednesday, that “brand-new state-of-the-art alarm system” didn’t trigger, La Spada said.
A video shared to La Spada’s social media shows the alleged robber using a tool to attempt to pry open the restaurant door. A second video shows the man walking around inside.
“The best part? Full face on camera. No shame whatsoever,” the restaurant wrote on Instagram. “I honestly can’t make this stuff up anymore.
“Owning a restaurant is hard enough without dealing with this.”
Speaking to CityNews, owner Scott Usheroff described the situation as “disappointing and quite frankly exhausting.”
He pointed to nearby Maison Benoît Labre on Atwater Avenue — the supervised inhalation and injection site — as being problematic for the neighbourhood, without claiming it is directly related to the break-in itself.
“We are constantly dealing with violent and aggressive drug addicts from the injection site behind the elementary school and criminals robbing us,” Usheroff said. “We don’t have anything to rob. No cash at restaurants. We mind our own business, we work hard and don’t bother anyone. Each time it costs us thousands in repairs and renovations.
“What is the Sud-Ouest or the city doing to help us small business owners? The police can’t do anything, we can’t do anything, so what do we do?”
Usheroff says he has been in touch with Montreal police, which did not send officers to the restaurant and instead asked him to bring footage of the break-in to a precinct.
Montreal police told CityNews it could not comment on specific cases for confidentiality reasons, and the police service did not answer when asked if break-ins were on the rise in Saint-Henri.
