The mercury is skyrocketing for Montreal this week, with temperatures expected to reach 28°C.

The city seeing a mix of sun and cloud on Monday with a high of 21°C.

Come Tuesday, it will truly feel like summer is here — Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasting 27°C with mainly sunny skies. Cloudy periods for the evening, with a low of 18°C.

Sunny on Wednesday with the same warm temperature of 27°C expected.

“Definitely the first taste of summer really is expected for this week,” said Peter Kimbell, Warning Preparedness Meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“We won’t be hitting records,” he added. “But we’ll be way above average and we’ll be enjoying it for sure.”

A high of 28°C is in store for Thursday — with a mix of sun and cloud, and a low of 15°C at night.

“We would expect warm weather by the end of May,” explained Kimbell. “We’re getting in a little bit early this year.”

“From time to time it happens,” he added. “We saw that in 2022.”

The normal highs around this time of year is about 19°C.

The record – around 31°C set on May 13th and 14th back in 2022.

“And the 15th and the 16th of May, the records were 30.6°C and 32.2°C set in 1961 and 1932, for those who remember 1932,” said Kimbell.

Showers to slightly cool off the week

To end the work week, the weather agency is predicting that rain will trickle in — showers on Friday with a high of 27°C.

The wet weather expected to continue into the long Victoria Day weekend.

A 60 per cent chance of showers for both Saturday and Sunday — with highs of 24°C and 18°C.

“Well shy of heat warning thresholds”

The weather agency reminding Montrealers to protect themselves from the sun.

“The biggest thing to mention to people is that really, at the time of year, the UV index is very high,” explained Kimbell.

“We’ve come off a stretch of cool weather,” he added. “Don’t forget to cover up because the UV index can cause sunburn.”

But despite the sun being very strong this time of year, Montreal will be “well shy of heat warning thresholds.”
