Montreal police arrest five in connection to thefts targeting elderly people

Montreal police arrested five suspects allegedly involved in multiple diversion thefts committed in and around Montreal in recent weeks.

The suspects allegedly took advantage of the vulnerability of elderly people to steal the jewelry they were wearing.

On May 20 and 21, the suspects arrested were two women aged 36 and 37, as well as three men aged 34, 39 and 45.

Three of them appeared at the Montreal courthouse and are facing charges of theft under $5,000. The other two were conditionally released on a promise to appear at a later date.

SPVM also conducted a search at a residence in Saint-Hubert and seized three vehicles.

Police say the investigation is ongoing as there is a possibility of similar unreported thefts.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact 911 or their local police station, as well as Info-Crime Montréal anonymously and confidentially at 514 393-1133.

What is diversion theft?

Diversion theft involves thieves using false pretenses to approach a victim (ask for directions, etc.). They then offer them a gift as a token of appreciation, such as a worthless necklace or ring, and even approach them.

They let the victim try on the gift during which they would attempt to steal one or more valuable pieces of jewelry they are wearing. They then leave the scene and the victim later realizes what happened.

SPVM prevention strategy

Montreal police are hoping to raise awareness about these types of crimes, which often target seniors.

It comes days after SPVM chief Fady Dagher joined community partners in a door-to-door campaign for seniors.

The month-long “Visit a Senior” campaign is aimed to raise awareness about abuse and fraud involving seniors, who are increasingly targeted by scams.

SPVM encourages seniors to be vigilant and to keep a safe distance from people.

“Always be on your guard, even if the stranger approaching you is a woman. Refuse any gifts offered to you. If possible, travel in groups and hide any valuable jewelry before arriving at your destination,” they wrote in a press release.
