Homeless encampment on Notre-Dame can remain in place until at least July 10

The Notre-Dame Street encampment won’t be taken down until at least July 10, according to an agreement by multiple stakeholders.

The Mobile Legal Clinic (CJI) — which filed an urgent legal proceeding in court, after Quebec’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTQ) warned it would dismantle the camp by June 10 — made the announcement on Facebook Monday.

The CJI wrote in a post that following negotiations with the Quebec government and the City of Montreal, the parties agreed to present in court on Monday a request to renew the provisional interlocutory injunction, prohibiting the dismantling of the encampment, until at least July 10.

“The (MTQ) will not be able to take any measure to expel people in homelessness living along Notre-Dame between Pie-IX Boulevard and St-Clément Street, in Montreal, at least until 10 July 2025,” the post reads.

Quebec Superior Court Judge Babak Barin ruled on June 18 that the MTQ could not dismantle the encampment before June 28.

The MTQ had written in a June 5 notice that they would evict occupants of the encampment and clean the space — inviting people who need additional resources to contact 211.

The CJI now says that on July 10, the parties will return to court.

“(CJI) hopes that a date can be fixed as quickly as possible so that the hearing on the interlocutory injunction request can be heard quickly,” said the post.
