An 80-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter Tuesday morning in Montreal’s Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
Montreal police (SPVM) say they received multiple 911 calls at around 9:50 a.m. reporting the collision in the parking lot of a shopping mall at the corner of Ontario and Aylwin streets.
“When police arrived on the scene, they located the driver of the electric scooter, an 80-year-old man, stuck under the sports utility vehicle,” said SPVM spokesperson, Véronique Dubuc.
Emergency crews were able to pull the man out from underneath the SUV. He was conscious and taken to hospital in critical condition, but by late Tuesday afternoon – he was considered out of danger.
“According to the initial information obtained from witnesses, the SUV was backing into a parking space,” explained Dubuc. “While backing up, it struck the electric scooter behind it.”
Police established a security perimeter around the area to facilitate the investigation, which is still ongoing.
