At least five people had to be relocated after their buildings were affected by a water main break in Montreal’s Sud-Ouest borough early Friday morning.

“Only a few residents are without tap water,” said Philippe Sabourin, a spokesperson for the city. “The repair will be executed by the borough.”

The water leak was detected around 3 a.m. on Lionel-Groulx Ave., between Atwater and Charlevoix. The valve was closed at around 6 a.m. this morning.

“A 12-inch water pipe,” explained the Montreal fire department. “Firefighters are finishing pumping out some buildings.”

The situation has forced the closure of Lionel-Groulx Ave.

This afternoon, the City of Montreal told CityNews that five water main breaks on the secondary network have occurred over the past few hours in the boroughs of Sud-Ouest, Ville-Marie, and Verdun.

“We are attempting to determine whether a link could be made between these various events,” they explained.

At the moment, the cause of the break is unknown.
