Starting Sept. 22, truckers are planning to disrupt rush hour traffic in several Quebec cities on Monday mornings in protest, demanding to be monitored, for the safety of all road users.
Organized by a group called “Assez c’est assez,” the protest hopes to create congestion between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. on those Monday mornings.
The actions will take place in 10 municipalities: Rosemère, Laval, Gatineau, Quebec City, Lévis, Trois-Rivières, Bécancour, Brossard, Longueuil and Boucherville.
The protesters intend to target critical infrastructure, including several strategic bridges. Disruptions are expected on the Pierre-Laporte Bridge in Quebec City, the Champlain Bridge in Montreal, and the Laviolette Bridge in Trois-Rivières.
They are asking for more regulation and oversight into work conditions and adherence of trucking companies into labour standards — to help increase safety on Quebec roads.
According to La Presse, road inspectors have not been patrolling highways since March – which would entail carrying out checks and intercepting offending truck drivers.
The Administrative Labour Tribunal had ordered their removal because they were reportedly being assaulted during certain operations. They are now confined to checkpoints where trucks are weighed.
Back on Aug. 25, a man died in a collision with a heavy truck on Highway 50.
The next day, another fatal accident occurred involving a truck on Highway 20.
A mother and her 5-year-old son died two days later following an accident with a heavy truck on Highway 30.
Last weekend in Montreal, a cyclist died after being struck by a heavy truck, and yesterday two people were injured after a collision between a semi-truck and a vehicle on Highway 30.
Despite the Association du cammionage du Québec supporting the demands of the group, it has reportedly dissociated itself from the upcoming demonstrations.
