Projet Montréal announced Friday that if they win the upcoming municipal election, they will look to increase bike sharing across the city.
Luc Rabouin, leader of Projet Montréal, is running on the platform of making Montreal more accessible for all, and for Montrealers to be able to have everything they need within a 15-minute walk.
Thursday as part of this approach, Projet Montréal announced they’d be looking to increase the number of public toilets that are available to Montrealers.
Projet Montréal says that 80 per cent of the population enjoys proximity, which is why they are also looking to increase bike sharing.
They add that right now, one in four people in Montreal use bike sharing, and by the end of the next term, they’d like 100 per cent of Montrealers to be able to live within a 15-minute walk to a bike sharing station.
“Since its inception, Projet Montréal has placed the quality of life of Montrealers at the heart of every decision. Bixi is part of that, and with 15 million trips in 2024, we can truly say that it is a means of transportation that is appreciated by Montrealers,” said Rabouin.
“What we are proposing today is not simply to add Bixi stations: it is to bring mobility services closer to where people live, in all neighborhoods, without exception. Whether you live in Pointe-aux-Prairies, Saint-Léonard, or downtown, you should have easy access to active, affordable, and reliable transportation options. For us, that’s what building a fairer, more sustainable, and more humane city is all about.”
In this plan, Projet Montréal will look to add over 1,000 new Bixi stations over the next four years, prioritizing the stations in outlying neighbourhoods, and ensuring a network in central neighborhoods to maintain stable and smooth service.
“The people of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles love Bixis and want more of them. Today, with our commitment, we are taking action. With the arrival of new stations in our neighborhoods, we are committed to taking concrete steps to improve local mobility, but also to fully recognize the right of people in the east to accessible, modern, and sustainable services,” said Rabouin.
“This is another step toward a more equitable city, and I am proud that it is starting here, in our community,” added Caroline Bourgeois, candidate for re-election as mayor of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles.”
