A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured in a stabbing outside a high school in Montreal on Tuesday morning and a 17-year-old charged with attempted murder.

Raphaël Bergeron, a spokesperson for the Montreal police (SPVM), said the incident happened around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Terrebonne Street and West Broadway in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough — near École Saint-Luc.

Police found the girl with a serious injury to her upper body caused by a sharp object — likely a slashing wound. She was taken to hospital in shock, but her injuries were not life-threatening. Reports suggest she nearly lost the use of her eye – suffering cuts above and below it.

Panicked and in a state of shock, the student managed to take refuge inside the school, while her attacker ran away.

Witnesses told officers they saw a suspect fleeing the area and police were able to identify the 17-year-old male. He was arrested later that morning at another school in the city’s Sud-Ouest borough.

He was taken to a detention centre, met with investigators, and appeared in youth court Wednesday where he was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon. He remains detained and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. His next court date is set for Nov. 3.

As the young man is a minor, his identity cannot be revealed.

School resources were made available to students who felt the need.
