16-year-old accused of murder, fraud in Terrebonne

By The Canadian Press

A 16-year-old wanted for second-degree murder was arrested Thursday by police in Terrebonne, in the Lanaudière region, the Sûreté du Québec confirmed.

The youth is suspected of killing a 19-year-old man last week after a conflict broke out between the two men and other people at the scene. The man “had serious injuries” when emergency personnel arrived, and he was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the SQ said in a press release.

The SQ investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Terrebonne/Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines/Bois-des-Filion Police Department, led to the youth’s arrest. Several witnesses present at the time of the crime were interviewed.

The youth, who was known to the authorities, was arrested around noon Thursday in the neighbourhood where he lives, said Sgt. Éloïse Cossette, spokesperson for the SQ.

He was already the subject of an arrest warrant for “theft and fraud related to online purchases,” the SQ said.

He allegedly victimized several people by advertising cellphones for sale on Facebook Marketplace, a second-hand goods exchange and sales platform owned by Meta.

“When people came to pick up the cellphone, he simply stole their money,” alleged Sgt. Cossette.

The SQ reminds people to remain cautious and vigilant when conducting this type of transaction and recommends meeting the seller or buyer in neutral and secure exchange areas. These areas are monitored by cameras 24 hours a day.

Since the suspect is a minor, he will appear Friday in juvenile court at the Laval courthouse.
