A 24-year-old man sleeping near a railway track was taken to hospital in critical condition after being struck by a train in Dorval, in Montreal’s West Island, early Thursday morning. By late afternoon, authorities said they no longer feared for his life.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the Dorval roundabout area, just outside the Montreal-Trudeau Airport perimeter.

According to initial information obtained by Montreal police (SPVM), the young man was struck by the train while lying on the ground between a fence and the tracks.

He was unconscious and seriously injured when police and paramedics arrived.

The SPVM has opened an investigation to try to clarify the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“At this point, everything suggests that this was an accidental incident,” said officer Caroline Chèvrefils, SPVM spokesperson.
