Bedford elementary school: Some teachers’ licences revoked as investigation continues

Quebec’s Ministry of Education has revoked the licences of some teachers implicated in the scandal at the Bedford Elementary School in the Côte-des-Neiges borough.

Other teachers remain suspended with pay as an investigation continues, according to the ministry.

In a statement to CityNews, the office of Education Minister Sonia LeBel said, “In the Bedford School case, investigative committees have been formed and are required to carry out rigorous work involving various legal and administrative procedures.”

“At present, some licences have already been revoked, and the process will continue to run its course,” it added.

Alain Perron, spokesperson for the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSM), said that, “once the ministerial decision to dismiss has been made, it automatically triggers the dismissal procedure set out in the local agreement.”

In October 2024, then-Education Minister Bernard Drainville suspended 11 teachers following an investigation which painted the school as having a toxic climate of fear and intimidation imposed by a clique of teachers.

The ministry had said at the time that the report showed troubling facts about actions and behaviours that raise concerns about the physical and psychological safety of students at the Côte-des-Neiges school, including physical and psychological abuse of students and staff, like yelling, humiliation, intimidation, insubordination and incivilities.

The incident sparked concerns from worried parents and triggered investigations into other Montreal schools.
