Seven-day strike at Kruger plant in LaSalle

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

About a 100 workers at the Kruger carton packaging plant in LaSalle began a seven-day strike on Wednesday morning.

This seven-day strike follows another one in November, which lasted only a day and a half.

Wage increases are the main point of contention.

The union members rejected the latest offers by a margin of 92.5 per cent last Saturday. This was a compromise proposed by the mediator assigned to the case.

Union president, Benoît St-Cyr, says the future collective agreement must “prevent the impoverishment of workers, given the high inflation during the term of the last collective agreement.”

The union is affiliated with the Fédération de l’industrie manufacturière, affiliated with the CSN.

Company management denies that the employer’s offers will result in workers becoming poorer. “Contrary to what seems to be being said, our offer makes up for the high inflation of recent years and improves our employees’ purchasing power in the future,” it replied. Management declined to comment further.
