Crisis in the Quebec Liberal Party: Pablo Rodriguez calls for unity

Amid a storm shaking his party, Liberal leader Pablo Rodriguez admits he doesn’t have unanimous support. Nevertheless, he remains steadfast: unity is necessary to win the next elections.
Leader Pablo Rodriguez delivered a fiery speech during his party’s end-of-session review on Friday morning.
“I am a fighter,” he declared.
Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of journalists’ questions focused on the crisis that has affected his party for the past three weeks.
On Thursday, several media outlets reported that the office used for Pablo Rodriguez’s campaign belonged to his wife. The campaign paid nearly $20,000 in rent.
Although this practice is legal, the Liberal leader said he took responsibility for “the mistake” and admitted that if he had to do it again, he would rent elsewhere.
“Would I do it again today based on perception? No. You know what? That’s perhaps the one thing I should have changed. But was everything done properly and respectfully? 100%,” he maintained.
Rodriguez reiterated that he would remain in office, even though several former ministers and members of parliament from the party are urging him to leave.
“I don’t let myself be affected by that. (…) Do I have unanimous support? No. Name me a leader in history, from any party, who has had unanimous support. There isn’t one, and that’s normal,” added Pablo Rodriguez.
Allegations about Rodriguez’s leadership campaign have been piling up in the media in recent weeks.
On Wednesday, the Permanent Anti-Corruption Unit (UPAC) launched a “criminal investigation” into the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ). The news came as a bombshell.
