Difficult winter weather caused a series of traffic incidents on Montreal’s South Shore Thursday morning, including multiple collisions and a major pile-up on Route 132.
According to Quebec 511, a pile-up involving at least a dozen vehicles occurred on Route 132 near Highway 20, significantly disrupting traffic in the area. Several other incidents were reported across nearby roadways, including:
- A two-vehicle collision on Route 132 near Highway 25
- A crash involving two semi-trailer trucks on Highway 20 (Jean-Lesage) near Industriel Boulevard
- A truck that rolled off the road on Highway 20 at the de Mortagne exit in Boucherville
- A semi-trailer truck that jackknifed in the centre lane of Highway 20 near the Highway 30 de l’Acier overpass
- Numerous stalled trucks on Route 132 near the Highway 25 ramp
Longueuil police (SPAL) said the incidents were caused by difficult weather conditions. No serious injuries were reported.
Route 132 has since reopened to traffic, but authorities say conditions remain hazardous. The main hot spots continue to be Route 132 and Highway 20 on the Montreal South Shore, particularly near the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel.
Greater Montreal roadways remain snow-covered, and snow removal operations are ongoing and will continue until conditions improve. Collision data is provided by the Sûreté du Québec.
Transports Québec (Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable) told CityNews motorists should take extra precautions during winter driving conditions and consider the following before hitting the road:
- Check road conditions: Plan your trip by consulting the Québec 511 website or mobile app, which provides real-time updates on winter conditions, accidents, roadwork and closures.
- Clear snow from your vehicle: Drivers must fully clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors, roof, hood, headlights and licence plates. Snow or ice falling from a vehicle can reduce visibility, cause injuries, damage other vehicles and lead to collisions. Failure to properly clear a vehicle can result in fines ranging from $60 to $100.
Motorists are urged to slow down, remain cautious and adjust their driving to weather conditions.
