Le Massif de Charlevoix: Employees accept the offer, reopening scheduled for Saturday

By The Canadian Press

Workers at Le Massif de Charlevoix, who had been on an unlimited general strike for three weeks, accepted the conciliator’s recommendation on Thursday. The labor dispute has thus ended, allowing the resort to resume operations this weekend, the company announced.

The recommendation was accepted by 91 per cent of members who voted in a secret ballot held at a general meeting, according to the Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs du Massif de Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, affiliated with the CSN.

The latter indicates that the new collective agreement provides for salary increases totaling 5, 4, 3, 3, and 4 per cent over a five-year period.

The new employment contract also includes “a mechanism to protect against inflation allowing for wage increases to be increased if the price index exceeds the negotiated increases,” according to the union.

“The last few years have been marked by rampant inflation. It was essential to obtain real protection for purchasing power,” commented the union president, Annick Simard, in a press release.

The employer also welcomed the outcome of the vote. The company indicated that the agreement provides for a return to work as early as Friday, and that winter sports enthusiasts will be able to return to the slopes starting Saturday.

The Charlevoix Massif ended its season on Monday after unionized employees rejected the settlement proposal submitted by the conciliator and the recourse to arbitration.

The union’s approximately 300 members had been on an indefinite strike since Jan. 2nd.
