Thousands of Quebec civil servants return to office 3 days a week

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Starting Monday, Quebec civil servants must return to the office “at least three days a week.”

The president of the Treasury Board, France-Élaine Duranceau, made the announcement on Dec. 3, along with a gradual reduction in the public service workforce over two years.

This return to the office is being met with reluctance, according to the two major unions representing Quebec government employees, the Syndicat de la fonction publique et parapublique du Québec (SFPQ) and the Syndicat des professionnels du gouvernement du Québec (SPGQ).

In an interview on Monday, Christian Daigle, president of the SFPQ, criticized the government for imposing a three-day-a-week return to the office simply to please chambers of commerce, which wanted to see more customers in downtown areas.

According to him, there is “no added value” in going from two days a week in the office to three.

He notes that some ministries have already postponed the return to the office three days a week until later because they were not ready.
