Back at the National Assembly after the crisis that shook the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ), MNA Marwah Rizqy maintains she is at peace with herself and with the actions she was “forced” to take.
As a reminder, after his victory as Liberal leader, Pablo Rodriguez, who did not hold a seat in the National Assembly, appointed Marwah Rizqy as parliamentary leader. Geneviève Hinse, a longtime collaborator of Mr. Rodriguez, then became his chief of staff.
But relations soured between the two women. Marwah Rizqy dismissed Geneviève Hinse without first consulting the Liberal leader. In response, Pablo Rodriguez expelled the Saint-Laurent MNA from the caucus.
These events plunged the party into a deep crisis that ended with Mr. Rodriguez’s resignation last December.
Today, Geneviève Hinse is suing Marwah Rizqy for $500,000 over her dismissal.
In her statement of defence, a copy of which was obtained by The Canadian Press on Monday, Ms. Rizqy justifies her decision to fire her chief of staff.
Marwah Rizqy maintains that, despite her warnings, Ms. Hinse and Mr. Rodriguez wanted to violate the rules of the National Assembly by disregarding the Ethics Commissioner and hiring staff paid by the National Assembly for “partisan purposes.”
When asked on Tuesday if she wished to return to the Liberal caucus, the MNA for Saint-Laurent said that it was “the prerogative of the next leader.”
“I never wanted to be excluded,” Marwah Rizqy stated on Tuesday during a press scrum at the National Assembly.
“I can assure you that my integrity, and that of the party, when I was parliamentary leader, I did everything to preserve it,” she added.
