Montreal’s brief thaw turns icy

A burst of sunshine and a brief climb above freezing will offer a short-lived break from winter’s grip this week, but not before a messy mix of flurries, drizzle and possible freezing rain moves through the region.

Residents can expect a bright but bitterly cold start to the day, with mainly sunny skies and light winds up to 15 km/h. Despite the sunshine, morning wind chills near minus–16° Celsius will make it feel much colder than the forecast high of +2°C. Clouds will begin increasing early this afternoon, with the UV index sitting at a low 2 C.

Cloud cover thickens tonight, bringing the chance of a few rain showers or flurries beginning overnight. Forecasters are also warning of a risk of freezing rain developing late tonight as temperatures hold steady near the freezing mark. Motorists are advised to watch for potentially slick conditions by early Tuesday morning.

Tuesday will see a continuation of unsettled weather. A few rain showers or flurries are expected in the morning, transitioning to periods of drizzle around midday. There remains a risk of freezing rain early in the day before temperatures climb to a milder high of +5° C. Skies will clear Tuesday night, with temperatures dropping to minus–6° C.

Midweek brings a return to more typical winter conditions. Wednesday will be cloudy with a high near 0° C, followed by clear skies and a sharp overnight low of minus–10° C. Thursday looks sunny but cool, with a high of 0° C and another clear, cold night dipping to minus–10° C.

Sunshine continues into Friday, though temperatures ease slightly to a high of minus–2° C. Clouds move in Friday night, bringing a 60 per cent chance of flurries and a low of minus–8° C.

The weekend trends cloudier, with a 60 per cent chance of flurries both Saturday and Sunday. Daytime highs will hover just below freezing, at minus–3° C Saturday and minus–2° C Sunday, while overnight lows remain near minus–8° C.

After a brief taste of milder air and mixed precipitation early in the week, winter’s chill quickly reasserts itself heading into the latter half of the week and weekend.
