François Legault to remain a member of the National Assembly until next election

By Thomas Laberge, The Canadian Press

François Legault says he intends to serve out his term as a member of the National Assembly for the riding of L’Assomption after handing over the reins to the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) to his successor on April 12.

“For him, it is first and foremost a question of responsibility towards his citizens: he did not want the people of L’Assomption to find themselves without a Member of Parliament mid-term. He also sees this period as a way to close his political career,” the primer’s office indicated in a written statement sent to The Canadian Press on Friday.

“He intends to be active in his county, to meet with citizens and, true to his priorities, he wants to take advantage of this role to promote and raise awareness of the businesses of L’Assomption,” it adds.

The two leadership candidates are Christine Fréchette and Bernard Drainville. The next leader of the CAQ will automatically become Premier of Quebec.
