Montreal universities drop slightly in global ranking

Some of Canada’s most prestigious universities have dropped in the annual ranking of the world’s best universities, released Monday.
The Center for World University Rankings evaluated more than 21,000 institutions based on four main criteria: teaching quality, graduate employability, faculty prestige, and research.
In Canada, only the University of Toronto retained its 23rd-place ranking.
McGill University dropped one spot, now sitting in 28th.
The University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta – in 49th and 82nd place respectively – also dropped one spot.
Thirty-eight Canadian universities are included in the 2026 rankings.
Université de Montréal is sitting at No. 126 on the list – down two places. Concordia University came in at No. 639 – down from 629 – and UQAM is 722nd.
Harvard University once again took the top spot, with MIT, Stanford, Cambridge and Oxford rounding out the top five.
