Two dead and six injured in St-Michel apartment fire

A fire in a Montreal apartment building left two dead and six injured in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough on Saturday morning.

The blaze is believed to have started in a second-floor apartment of a residential building on 42nd Street near 24th Avenue before spreading to the third floor.

“When firefighters entered, they discovered two bodies in the apartment where the fire is believed to have started,” said Constable Manuel Couture, spokesperson for the Montreal Police (SPVM). The deaths were confirmed at the scene.

Since there was a death, the investigation was transferred to the SPVM’s Arson Section, but the cause of the fire was still unknown.

Two people were transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Four other people were injured but were treated at the scene by Urgences-santé paramedics.

More than 60 firefighters responded to the scene and worked for several hours to bring the fire under control. By approximately 9 a.m., the situation appeared to be contained.

The Canadian Red Cross has deployed personnel to assist residents displaced by the fire. Reports from the scene indicate the dwelling may have been occupied by a family consisting of two adults and two children.
