A man in his 60s reportedly fled Thursday evening in a patrol car he allegedly stole in Montreal, according to police reports.
The suspect’s escape lasted just under 30 minutes. Authorities were able to locate him and the Montreal police (SPVM) vehicle in Verchères, in the Montérégie region.
Around 8:45 p.m., the 61-year-old man allegedly seized an SPVM SUV during a police operation taking place at the intersection of Papineau Avenue and Sainte-Catherine Street in the Ville-Marie borough.
The SPVM has not confirmed whether the man was connected to the police operation or was simply a passerby.
“The suspect then fled toward the South Shore,” said SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils. “This was followed by multiple searches involving several officers to locate the patrol car.”
Chèvrefils indicated that the alleged car thief’s chase ended around 9:20 p.m., after he crashed into a structure on the property of a residence in the municipality of Verchères, where police found him.
The officers arrested the suspect and transported him to a hospital as a precautionary measure, since he did not appear to have any injuries.
“No one else was injured during this incident,” Chèvrefils said, adding that an investigation is underway.
