RCMP arrest Montreal teen allegedly planning attack against high school using AI

A teenager who was allegedly planning an attack against a high school using AI was arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Friday morning in Montreal.

Officers from RCMP’s integrated national security enforcement team arrested the teenager following a raid of his parents’ home in the Rosemont neighbourhood, where investigators continue their search for electronic devices and other evidence.

According to RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Érique Gasse, the investigation into the teen was prompted by a tip from American authorities.

“We have reasonable grounds to fear that he was involved in ideologically-motivated extremist activities,” Gasse said.

Gasse added that the teen allegedly posted threatening messages on Telegram against Muslim, Haitian and LGBTQ communities.

The young suspect is expected to appear in a youth court in Montreal. Authorities will seek a peace bond order against the teen, while the investigation continues. Charges may be laid at a later date.

The arrest comes just days before the start of the school year.

“At no time, the population was at risk because we had surveillance on him and now he’s out of the way,” Gasse said.

Police say that the AI company used by teen cooperated with the investigation, without naming the platform.
