A 45-year-old man was charged on Tuesday afternoon with the premeditated murder of 43-year-old Gabie Renaud in Saint-Jérôme, whose body was found in her apartment just a few days ago — three weeks after her death.

Jonathan Blanchet faces the charge related to what authorities believe was a femicide linked to domestic violence.

“Blanchet is detained for the moment,” said Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales (DPCP) spokesperson Patricia Johnson in an email to CityNews.

She added that he appeared yesterday and that the case was postponed to Nov. 7 for the bail hearing.

According to Radio-Canada, Blanchet appeared via videoconference from his hospital bed after being hospitalized following a suicide attempt.

On or near Sept. 7, authorities say that Renaud was killed then found in her apartment on Jean-Paul-Riopelle Street in Saint-Jérôme on Friday.

According to Radio-Canada, Blanchet has a criminal record showing approximately 30 arrests, six convictions for domestic violence, and a three-year prison sentence in 2020.
