Montreal police investigate overnight vehicle fires in Rivière-des-Prairies

By News Staff

Montreal police are investigating two separate overnight arson incidents in the Rivière-des-Prairies borough that destroyed a total of seven vehicles.

The first fire was reported just after 2:15 a.m. Sunday, when a 911 call was made about a burning vehicle on Gaston Maillet Ave., near Joliet Curie Ave. Police said a cube truck parked on the street was completely destroyed. Firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department were already controlling the fire when police arrived.

Investigators found incendiary material at the scene. According to police, one or more suspects set the vehicle on fire and fled before officers arrived. No one was injured, and nearby properties were not damaged.

The second fire occurred about an hour later, around 3:30 a.m., in a business parking lot near Henri-Bourassa Blvd. and Rivière-des-Prairies Blvd. Police said six vehicles — four cars, a van, and another cube truck — were set on fire. One or more suspects set the vehicles on fire and fled before police arrived. All six vehicles were declared total losses.

Firefighters controlled the flames before police arrived, and incendiary material was found at the scene. Suspects fled before authorities arrived. No one was injured, and no nearby property was damaged.

In both cases, the investigations have been transferred to the Montreal Police Arson Unit. Police have secured the scenes so investigators can analyze them and check for nearby surveillance cameras to help understand the circumstances of the fires.

Officials said no arrests have been made, and the investigations are ongoing.
