A 31-year-old woman is dead after allegedly being pushed from a third-floor balcony of an apartment building in Montreal’s Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough on Thursday.
The woman died of her injuries in hospital, Montreal police (SPVM) said Monday evening. She has been identified as Tadjan’ah Desir.
“This is the first murder of 2026 to occur in the Montreal area,” said SPVM spokesperson Manuel Couture.

Police say a 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on Thursday in connection with the incident. James Theramene of Laval was charged with aggravated assault the following day.
The incident took place around 8:15 a.m. Thursday on Sainte-Catherine Street near Jeanne-d’Arc Avenue.
According to witnesses who spoke with police, a confrontation between the woman and the man allegedly escalated on the third-floor balcony, during which the woman was pushed. She was later found on the ground on Sainte-Catherine Street. She was brought to hospital in critical condition and later died.
